One Week, Vegan: A Summary

Tonight our tacos were served up Sweeney Todd style. Do you see my poor little finger?? All in the name of veganism…I’m just thankful the pepper I was chopping wasn’t spicy, and the fact that my finger is numb is more a blessing than a worry.

Also noteworthy: Saying goodbye to my beautiful Musquee de Provence pumpkins. They were the only ones that survived the demon squash bugs this past summer, but they finally succumbed to old age. I’m sad we didn’t get our new oven in time to roast them.

I just threw this picture of Molly and Woody in because it’s adorable. It does make for some good motivation though. One week into this program and I haven’t touched a single animal product. When you’re constantly surrounded by pets who do things like this, how can you feel bad about that decision?

Last night I watched “Life in a Day,” a documentary made by National Geographic. It’s a compilation of images and clips filmed by people all over the world on a single day. For one clip, they show a cow being slaughtered. It was so unexpected I didn’t even have time to look away. I think that’s something everyone should see before digging into their next hamburger.

When there’s such an enforced blindness about slaughter, the connection between life and the death served on your plate seems nearly invisible-as it is, for most. But the real truth is that every cow, pig and chicken that’s killed for our food doesn’t want to die. No living thing does. It’s a hard concept to grasp when as consumers, all we see is the plastic wrapped product for the taking. Although I began this program for health reasons, I’m understanding it’s importance for others.

Being Vegan: Day 6

Lunch yesterday. Yum? I think so. As you can probably see, I couldn’t quite wait to take the picture before biting into that pita with peanut butter and agave. I’ve been craving peanut butter something fierce. (Odd since I never liked it before).

Tonight, I made roasted spaghetti squash. This is what it looks like once it’s scraped out of the shell.

I added some organic, no sugar added marinara sauce on top with some ground beef imitator ground up in the sauce. Add a slice of whole grain bread, a glass of merlot and you’ve got one guilt-free, delicious dinner! I couldn’t believe how good the faux-meat was-nothing like the gelatinous hotdog.

Farting, Pooping and Bloating


All day I’ve been trying to think of a polite way to breach the topic of digestion. I’ve got nothin’.

Let me go all Eric Carle on you for a sec. After munching through one banana, a handful of blueberries, a few cups of grapes, two clementines and one apple, my toilet is ready for retirement. So is my colon.

Note for tomorrow: more veggies, less fruit.

Optimism, where are you?!

ImageCulinarily, today has been both indulgent and disappointing. I woke up with plenty of time, at least for a McKenzie morning, to make a solid breakfast, but I wasn’t horribly enthused about oatmeal (my stand-by).

I decided on a bowl of fruit but I was still hungry afterward so I toasted half a vegan bagel. Now, I was worried because of the listed ingredients that this would taste like bird feed cleverly molded into a bagel shape, but alas! It was fantastic! (P.S. if anyone can tell me what “sprouted whole wheat berries” are, you get a gold star.

Here’s where the indulgent part comes in. I covered it with a big ol’ layer of cherry jelly. *Hand smacks forhead.* Later I had a moment of sheer panic when I realized that jelly is made with pectin, typically a horse product. Thankfully, Smucker’s makes their with fruit pectin! That was close.


Then, I was desperately trying to think of anything I could take for lunch and totally blanked. As delicious as straight up collard green leaves sound, I felt like I had no options…so I packed up a container of Kashi Go Lean Crunch and a water bottle full of almond milk. When lunch (finally) came around after several hours of shakiness that would put Michael J. Fox to shame, I decided to try a veggie sub from Subway instead. Worst mistake I’ve made in the past three days. Whether it was the great volume of mustard the condiment-loving worker put on my sandwich or her equally enthused hatred for spinach (I got three leaves), it was just generally a poopy sub. Wahh. So cereal it was.

ImageThen for dinner I made a chili dog, I was skeptical of the cylindrical molded tofu, but when my dog came over with his tail wagging I thought “hey, maybe if he thinks it’s a real hotdog then I will too”. Nope-he’s just a fatty. I have to give the company kudos for the flavor which was lovely and smoky-It was very similar. But the texture? Not so much.

The saving grace of the day was the soy hot chocolate shown at left. It showed no hint of it’s hidden vegetable roots and damn was it tasty. Next time I’ll change the “pinch” of Cayenne to an omittance of it. Too spicy for my wimpy taste buds, but here’s the link to the recipe.http://allrecipes.com/recipe/delicious-vegan-hot-chocolate/

Being vegan: Day 1

Don’t worry…I went out with a bang. Yesterday I ate nearly all meat and cheese, although a few raspberries may have slipped in there at some point…

ImageToday, day 1, I woke up around 6 in the morning (on my day off, I might add) with an upset stomach and enough nerves to make a sloth jittery. This, of course, was due to my paranoia about needles which I would have to confront head on come 9:30 or so.

Confront, I did. After the nearly painless blood drawing (results to come) my dad and I had a smoothie with apple, strawberries, blackberries, oats and almond milk. We also had an apple on top of the fruit smoothie, which may account for why we both had similar cart-halting, bathroom-sprinting experiences today- mine at Whole Foods and his at Kroger. TMI? Maybe.

I do love Whole Foods. They have such great options for people with not so typical diets, and their prepared food is always spectacular. My mom bought a vegan blueberry muffin and it was ethereal. However, their produce is beyond expensive (hence my sending the pops to Kroger for veggies and fruit), and I discovered this honey as well. I had to share. Now, I’ve heard good things about Manuka Honey. But 33 dollars?! Hot damn. I’ll buy a hive for that much, thank you very much.


All in all, successful first day.
